Membawakan genre alternative rock dan funk rock, group band ini didirikan pada tahun 1983 dengan nama awal Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. Group band ini awalnya beranggotakan Anthony Kiedis (vokalis), Michael “Flea” Balzary (bassist), Jack Irons (drums) dan Hillel Slovak (guitar).
Tahun 1984, album pertama RHCP berjudul Red Hot Chili Peppers. Album pertama RHCP ini tidak meraih sukses. Penjualan album ini tidak terlalu menggembirakan. Pada tahun 1985, RHCP meluncurkan album kedua yang berjudul Freaky Styley. Album kedua ini juga mengalami nasib yang sama, gagal diterima masyarakat pecinta musik rock.
Dalam perjalanannya, RHCP telah meluncurkan sembilan album studio, sembilan #1 modern rock hits dan telah menjual hampir 50 juta keping album di dunia (termasuk penjualan untuk ketiga album RHCP yaitu Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Californication dan By the Way. Album RHCP selanjutnya adalah The Uplift Mofo Party Plan. Album ini meraih sukses berhasil masuk ke Billboard Top 200.
